Accountants looking forward to February

I referred to the January pressure on the capacity of accountancy firms in an earlier post.

I referred to the January pressure on the capacity of accountancy firms in an earlier post.

The tweets above are just a few of the ones I spotted in my timeline on Saturday and these confirm that weekend working is often the norm this month.

Fourteen years after the first January rush caused by the change to self-assessment, firms are still unable to persuade clients to provide information in good time. It seems that some clients will never respond to pressure, price incentives or the threat of penalties: they will always appear at the last minute.

So, if the clients can't be fixed, then it follows that the only way for their accountants to return to normal working patterns every January is to get rid of the delinquent clients completely.

Firing clients is something that accountants find difficult for moral, professional and, sometimes, financial reasons - but if they don't, surely they are just allowing themselves to be taken advantage of again next year?

Or maybe they don't mind working weekends.
