February 2012 should be technology month

The busiest, most stressful month of the year has just started for many accountancy firms.  It's tax season, and much midnight oil is likely to be burned between now and the 31st.

The busiest, most stressful month of the year has just started for many accountancy firms.  It's tax season, and much midnight oil is likely to be burned between now and the 31st.

Why though?

Self assessment for personal tax returns started for the 1996/97 tax year, so the first filing deadline was 31st January 1998.  Firms have had 14 years to adapt to the new regime and learn how to manage the process - yet January remains a month when tax staff are barred from taking leave and often work overtime.

If you are reading this and nodding then the question I would ask you is: what are you planning on doing next year to make things different?

When you emerge from your January maelstrom, I urge you to use February and March (before the cycle starts again) to think long and hard about the changes you and your firm need to make.

Hint: it's all about technology.
